For most of the Americans, safe drinking water is not a major concern, but should it be a major concern? The truth is that, chemicals, minerals, and metals that are hazardous to your health are contained in most of the municipal and rural water supplies. Fortunately, there are numbers of purification options out there for you to choose from that can significantly reduce the level of chemicals, minerals, metals, and other harmful particles in your drinking water.

Many independent organizations suggest that your water should yearly be checked, just to be safe, even if it is proven safe in the past.

Solutions for a safe drinking water

If your water fails the test and shows that you don't have a safe drinking water, you still have an option to treat it making it safe again. The appropriate solution depends on the water contaminants present in your drinking water. Since there are different water purification systems, each of them are specifically made to treat different water quality problems. Here's a list of the most common water purification systems and their specific uses.


• Carbon Filters - available in both solid block and granulated varieties. They are used to treat waters

contaminated by fuel products and pesticides. They are also effective at removing foul tastes and odors from water. There are specially made, certified carbon filters that can help resolve the problem with lead, VOC's, asbestos, cysts, and coliforms.


• Reverse Osmosis Filters - a purification system that uses pressure, forcing the water through a permeable membrane that filter contaminants out of it. This is one of the few filters that is effective at removing metals and nitrates from your water. Many bottled water companies also uses this type of filtration.


• Water Softening Systems - This system is effective on treating hard water problems by removing the minerals from the water, especially calcium and magnesium. Hard water and its high mineral content are not generally linked to many safe drinking water issues but with a high enough levels, they can be a problem. If you have a hard water problem, it is an excellent investment having a water softening system installed. This will reduce the mineral buildup in pipes, on fixtures, and also makes the water more pleasant for bathing and washing.
